PHOTOS: Best of Reno Race

So far this year, I’ve competed in Texas, North Carolina, Indiana, and Wisconsin.  For a change, I looked forward to racing on my home course!

My home course for fall and winter paddling, I paddled at 27 degrees one day with that Reno wind blowing constantly.  I persisted with my workout even when I couldn’t feel my fingers or move them.  I enjoy hanging out downtown at the cool restaurants, a theater, and kayak store (for when I forget gear) within a short walk from the course.

While it needs a good storm to get things started, last December 31, a big one came; unfortunately, it severely damaged the course and flooded downtown Reno.

They’ve repaired the course since, and it’s back in time for this year’s race!  At 2,400 cfs, the course featured challenging offset gate combinations thanks to course designer and huggable friend Charles Albright.

Paddling a C2 with Erik McKee.  Erik and I trained on the Reno course this past winter, but NEVER on C2!  We must have whacked every gate on the course like a piñata!  While not pretty, we made all the gates on our second run!
