MIRACLE RACE: The highlight of the Miracle Race was visiting the Giddens’ new brewery in Kernville and racing C2 with Rebecca. The food, atmosphere, and, of course, the service (Rebecca was our server) are the best! They’ve really done a lot to change the place from when it was an antique store. MOKE RACE: This race was different from any other Sierra Cup race I’ve paddled in that there was a “BIG MOVE” on Gate 10 for intermediate and higher-level paddlers. . An upstream gate in a heddy (hole/eddy), the trick to the big move is to come out of Gate 9 already pointing river left and driving hard in order to generate that critical right to left momentum. If you blow the move, downstream momentum will take you past the heddy. Since slalom is about pushing your limits to improve your skills, Gate 10 was there to push the envelope — thanks, Keith! Speaking of pushing the envelope, my goal this weekend was to learn how to paddle a C1 and race it the next day. It took a couple of swims but I got the hang of it. I learned the hard way that paddling a C1 is significantly tougher than K1. All the moves and lines I could do on a K1 are sketchier with only one blade while kneeling. At the starting line, I was terrified — it’s been a while since I felt this way on a slalom course! My puffer fish helmet gave me calming vibes. On this race, my objective was to avoid swimming and to be able to make all gates (except Gate 10, which I would skip). On my second run, I did it!

MIRACLE RACE & MOKELUMNE RACE September 16-17 & 23-24, 2006 Kern River, CA & Mokelumne River, CA
They allowed women TO VOTE almost 100 years ago. Just recently, they allowed women TO RACE C1. At the Moke, I learned to paddle and roll a C1 for the very first time. The next day, I raced! Half the paddle, twice the girl!!!

My friend Aaron Sarver told me jokingly that I need to learn to paddle a C1 because “any ape can learn to kayak”. On Saturday, he put me in a C1, instructed me how to hold and use a single-bladed paddle and how to roll. After two hours of instruction and two swims, I was ready to race the next day!
