Together with my friend Eric “Butter” Hurd, I helped build the slalom gates on the course to pass the time while waiting for the whitewater park to open. Every day, we’d be allowed to visit the course but not paddle. Some days, they would release water to test the pumps. We would watch the brown muddy water cascade through the artificial obstacles and rocks.

Note the original version of the big drop using a wing dam, which would eventually be replaced with good old-fashioned rocks. This version is truly more monstrous -- we're glad we didn't race on this one!

Later photos show Scott Shipley in blue shirt and shorts directing the crew on adjusting the wing dam.
